It’s important to stay on top of equipment inspection to ensure operator safety. Summit aerial lift solid tires are built to OEM specifications, available in non-marking tread to keep floors clean, made from the highest quality materials, and extensively tested in diverse conditions for durability.
Keep the following tips in mind when inspecting aerial lift tires.
Tread Area
Check the tread area and sidewalls of the tire for cuts, tears, or missing chunks. When the tread area has begun to wear down, it’s a sign that the tires have been heavily used and it’s time for a replacement. Cuts or tears can compromise the integrity and durability of the tire.
Type of Tire
There are multiple types of aerial lift tires including air tires, foam-filled tires, and solid tires. Ensure that when tires are replaced, they are replaced with the same type of tire. A machine should have all one type of tire, never mix types of tires on the same machine. We recommend going with all solid tires. Solid tires ensure no flats or costly repairs, eliminate downtime, and last 3-4 times longer than standard air-filled tires when used for the same application.

Lug Nuts
Make sure any lug nuts on the tire are properly torqued.
Rim Damage
Make sure there's no damage to the tire rim to prevent tire failure. If it’s starting to break away from the rim, the tire needs to be replaced.
Static Strap
When using non-marking tires, don’t forget to make sure a static strap is installed. A static strap protects on-board electronics from the static build up.
Staying on top of maintenance and inspections will ensure minimum downtime and prime operating capacity.

Aperture holes were added to solid tires to provide a cushion of air in the tire. This cushion of air absorbs some of the vibrations during operation of the machine and makes the ride more comfortable for the operator. They can both promote a smooth and a more cushioned ride.
Solid tires with aperture holes give a ride that is like an air tire yet gives the benefits of no flats of a solid tire.

Internal temperature with solid tires can be an issue as the machines are operating and the tires are in use. High temperatures can take a toll on the tires and decrease their lifespan. Aperture holes allow tires to run at a cooler temperature as the holes allow for air to pass thru.
The holes provide a way to release heat during operation and thus increase the lifetime of the tire.

Solid tires with aperture holes have to be replaced once they have been worn down to the aperture holes. Tires without aperture holes however can be worn down even further leading to a longer life and lower replacement.
In tough working conditions, tires without aperture holes have a higher weight capacity. Fully solid tires have increased machine stability. Operating heavy loads on tires with aperture holes on machines can lead to aperture holes compressing and stress cracking.

When a grouser shoe is not predrilled, the clip-on rubber pad is a very practical option. If the grouser steel is too hard to drill and plasma cutting is used, the holes can be too large or over-blown. This means washers are used which concave in work environments making the pads come loose.
The clip-on pad means no drilling and avoids these issues installing in as little as 6 hours.
Bolt-on pads are an excellent option to keep the machine the same width preventing damage from the hardware to curbs and ground surfaces. Dan has years of experience in the rental industry installing tracks every day.
Start by raising the machine JUST high enough for the cleats to clear the bogie frame. A common mistake is raising the machine too high allowing excessive amounts of slack on the bottom. This makes it difficult to get the slack where you need it.
Read the owner’s manual thoroughly and safely support the machine where the manual indicates.
Determine whether your machine is tensioned with hydraulic pressure or grease.
HYDRAULIC PRESSURE | Release tension by locating your machines release valve.
GREASE | Carefully loosen the fitting to release the grease pressure.
Once you have relieved most of the pressure and grease, it may be easiest to completely remove the fitting. Removing the fitting ensures your tensioner is 100% collapsed.
To remove rubber tracks, maneuver the rubber tracks from the rear idler so you can pull it forward off the sprockets.
When removing heavier tracks, you will need a machine to help lift and maneuver.

To install rubber tracks, follow the same steps but in reverse.
Once you get the track started on the sprocket, you can use the machine’s drive to walk it onto the idler the rest of the way, using wood to allow it to roll onto the idler.

Proper track tension on your rubber tracks ensures top performance, extends the life of the undercarriage, minimizes downtime, and reduces wear on the track drive components. It’s important to try and reduce slippage and spinning of your rubber tracks. Slippage and spinning accelerate track shoe grouser wear or tread depth and limits productive work. Heavy contact between the sprocket teeth, track links, rollers and between idler tread surfaces accelerates wear. Constantly turning to one side will reduce the life of a rubber or steel tracks.
LIMIT HIGH SPEED
Limit nonproductive, high-speed travel because high-speed operation accelerates wear on all components.
Track wear is directly proportional to speed. Speed increases stress on the track.

EQUAL USE IN FORWARD AND REVERSE
Equal use in forward and reverse could cause longer life. With constant use in one direction, the sprocket wears on one side of the tooth more than the other resulting in quicker wear. The same goes for the links in the tracks.
DON'T PARK IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT
If cracks appear in the tracks, the track is worn. Cracks can be caused from heat. To prevent wear from heat, don’t park in direct sunlight.

Clean undercarriages frequently. Prevent packing of soil and debris in undercarriage components by cleaning out the track as frequently as possible. Packing prevents the proper engagement between the mating components such as sprocket teeth and track links. This can cause increased loads on undercarriage components and higher wear rates.
Proper track tension on your tracks ensures top performance, extends the life of the undercarriage, and
reduces wear on the track drive components.
If you’re working uphill shift the weight of the machine to the rear. This adds more load to the rear rollers and increases sprocket teeth and links forward drive-side wear. There will be a light load on the undercarriage when reversing down the hill.
When working downhill shift the weight to the front of the machine. The additional load will be placed on the front roller, idler tread surface, and track links. When you reverse up the hill, the links rotates against the reverse-drive side of the sprocket tooth. This helps the undercarriage wear evenly.
Balance wear between each side of the undercarriage by changing the work direction on the slope. Working on a slope or side hill shifts weight to the downhill side of the machine and causes additional wear on the roller flanges, sides of the track links, and grouser ends.

Train mechanics and operators

Do a daily check on the machine before it goes out to the job and when it comes back. Inspect your undercarriage in detail. Pay attention to the small things. Remember things like oil leakage may indicate a failed seal in a roller or idler which can lead to major failure in undercarriage parts.
When working in harsh terrain, increase the frequency that machinery is checked.
Mounting and dismounting machines
Use the three-point rule when mounting and dismounting machines to ensure safety. Use two hands and one foot or one hand and two feet to support yourself and only break these three points of contacts when you have reached the ground or the cab of the machine.
Use common sense
Heavy equipment machines are designed for specific tasks – use the machines for what the manufacturer intended it for. Do not rush the machine especially on slopes or slippery terrains.

Standard orders deliver in 1-2 days to 97% of the continental U.S. with FREE freight on any size order! To locate the shipping company’s tracking number, simply reference your invoice or receipt.
It usually doesn’t matter which side the A and B tires go on if they are on opposite sides! They’re often a 70:30 offset.
In the rare event you need to submit a warranty claim, take a minimum of three pictures: the serial number, the entire product, and the failure. Email them to warranty@summittracks.us and your rep. Include the date the product was purchased, the date it was installed, and any other details you feel are pertinent to your claim.
We accept tracks for recycling at our New Jersey, Texas, and Washington facilities. Once you know the quantity and width of the tracks, please contact us for details and costs prior to shipping them. Keep in mind that all tracks must be strapped to a pallet and we do NOT accept non-metal core tracks or tires.
Most tracks are non-directional. In the event they are not, the side of the track is marked with arrows.

We displayed our new turf tread at our booths. It’s a new rubber track offering an innovative tread design for optimal traction on asphalt, gravel, grass, and dirt. The turf tread is a great option for spring weather conditions engineered to guarantee longevity and durability.

Here are some signs that you need to replace your rubber track:
The tread is worn down
When the depth of the track tread is worn and the track is close to being flat, you have little to no traction. This causes slippage, damages to the undercarriage, and safety issues when operating. The tension of the track can swag and extend over time with heavy usage leading to a loss of traction as well. If cracks appear in the tracks, the track is worn. Cracks can be caused from heat. To prevent wear from heat, don’t park in direct sunlight.
The steel cording is showing
If you can see the steel cording of your track, the track is very close to snapping. When the steel cording is showing, the steel is susceptible to moisture which causes rust and weakens the steel causing track failure. Look into replacement track options if the steel cording is showing.
The guide rail is deteriorating
Take note if the guide rail is deteriorating on your track. This puts a lot of strain on the undercarriage and could result in the track to derail.

Several manufacturers have seen interest in these smaller models ramp up over the past six to eight months. And of course, we are following this development closely, as one feature of mini excavators is their rubber, rather than steel, tracks. This allows them to leave a less destructive footprint in some of the more delicate projects they are used in—landscaping, for example.
Depending on the maker, these machines are variously called mini or compact excavators. “Compact excavator” is the most accepted and inclusive term, so we’ll use that in this discussion.
To refine the definition further, we are talking about excavators in the two to nine metric ton range. Another distinctive feature of the compact machine is the likelihood that they will have a zero, reduced, or minimal tail-swing to enable them to do more in less space. And most have a blade that allows them to backfill after trenching.
When comparing the various models available, experts recommend a few key features to look for, although the utility of each feature may not be the same in all applications.
· If you need to add a hydraulic tool to your machine, you will want to make sure that the machine’s
hydraulics is equipped and rated for the type and size of attachment you will use.
· If you commonly need to maneuver your excavator into backyards or through certain narrow doorways,
you will want to look for a retractable undercarriage, which most, but not all models offer.
· Also, ask yourself if you need a canopy or a 4-season cab.
Another issue to consider is the weight of the compact excavator. This will affect the size and rating of trailers and towing vehicles and even licensure. Of course, the fact is that the compact excavator category is certainly lighter and smaller than a full-size excavator—another advantage to the compact range!
The word heard most frequently when discussing the appeal of the compact excavator is “versatility.”
Earlier, we mentioned landscaping and trenching, but those are by no means the extent of the machine’s ability to adapt to a host of applications. Besides the use of the bucket for demolition, construction, or other heavy lifting, their versatility is only limited by the number of attachments available—mowing, mulching, and digging fence-posts are just a few of the many jobs the right attachment will allow you to tackle.
This versatility also means that you need to keep an eye on the excavator’s rubber tracks. Some of the surfaces they traverse are more likely to wear down the tracks. Wear is easy to spot, though, and you should have plenty of warning before failure, giving you plenty of time to source your replacement tracks from Summit Supply. And we make that easy on you.

The rubber compound used in tracks we sell is based on real rubber. It’s a flexible, wear-resistant material that gives you the smooth, quiet ride only rubber can give. As for durability, the material is one of the main reasons for our astounding low number in warranty claims – less than 0.01%.
Imagine a piece of paracord wrapped tightly around a wooden dowel rod – that is what a continuously wound cable system resembles. Much like the snug fit of the paracord wrapped around the wooden rod, the steel cable winds continuously around the track, and each cable lays side by side with very little space between them. The most important feature of a continuously wound cable system is its STRENGTH! Continuous Steel Cording is STRONGER thank overlapping (multiple cords). The tracks endurance depends on the tensile strength of steel cables. Tracks with multiple cords aka overlapping connections, have several wire strands extruding into a belt. The steel belts are cut to lengths and then overlapped and vulcanized together with rubber. In a track that uses this kind of overlapping connection, the strength of the track will depend upon the strength of the rubber adhesion (the overlapping point) – rather than the cable’s durability and strength. What we have discovered is that most failures occur on tracks that have this overlapping connection because of the adhesion between the overlapped wire belts.
